Discipling 12
Lesson 1

The Nature of God

Concept:

As we begin in our quest to be a disciple, we need to know the one that we are going to follow. As we spend time with the Lord then we will look and act like the Lord. You will always imitate the people that are always around you. So let’s associate with God. We need the Spirit of God to bring us a revelation of who God really is. We have the opportunity to fellowship with the God of all creation. He said that He is waiting to come in and communicate with us. II Peter 1:4 says we have the very nature of God, we have the mind of Christ, and we have the Spirit of God living in us. It is time that we allow the Spirit of God to show us what all these New Creation Realities really mean. WE NEED TO KNOW THE LORD.

Scripture Application:
The best way to understand God is by looking at the names that are used for God. We can see the nature and character of God reflected in these names.

1. Elohim: The Supreme God, the creator. Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

2. Jehovah: Self-Existence or Eternal One the Lord, covenant relationship with mankind. (Gen 15:2, But Abram said, "O Sovereign LORD, what can you give me since I remain childless and the one who will inherit my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?" Gen 15:6, Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him as righteousness. Gen 17:1, When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to him and said, "I am God Almighty ; walk before me and be blameless.)

3. El: Strong or strength

4. Theos: Deity, the Supreme God. (Matt 1:23, "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel" --which means, "God with us." Matt 3:16, As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. Matt 4:4, Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'")

5. El Shaddai: The almighty, the satisfier, the breasty one, and the mountain. (Gen 17:1, When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to him and said, "I am God Almighty ; walk before me and be blameless. Gen 28:7, and that Jacob had obeyed his father and mother and had gone to Paddan Aram. Gen 35:11, And God said to him, "I am God Almighty ; be fruitful and increase in number. A nation and a community of nations will come from you, and kings will come from your body. Ex 6:3 I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob as God Almighty, but by my name the LORD I did not make myself known to them.)

6. Adonai: Lord and it is showing Jesus. (Gen 24:10, Then the servant took ten of his master's camels and left, taking with him all kinds of good things from his master. He set out for Aram Naharaim and made his way to the town of Nahor. Ex 34:9, "O Lord, if I have found favor in your eyes," he said, "then let the Lord go with us. Although this is a stiff-necked people, forgive our wickedness and our sin, and take us as your inheritance." Ex 4:10, Moses said to the LORD, "O Lord, I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant. I am slow of speech and tongue." Action:

Begin to read the scriptures that identify the names of God and this will help you know the Lord in a greater dimension. Take three of the Names of God and meditate on them. Read and reread the scriptures that relate to that name. We will share the transformation the next time we are together.
