Lesson 10

Repentance

Concept:

As Jesus began His earthly ministry we find that His theme was “Repent” for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. We can readily see that the concept of repentance is a theme that is at the heart of the Bible. All men are told to repent and return to the Lord.

When Jesus sent out His disciples to preach and teach and heal, there were a considerable amount of miracles that took place. Jesus tells us that one of the purposes for the miracles was to cause people to repent. Luke 10:13 condemns the people of Bethsaida because the miracles did not cause them to repent. He stated that the dead people of Sidon would have repented in sackcloth and ashes if the same things were done in their day.

When Peter preached his anointed sermon on the day of Pentecost, the people were crying out what must we do to be saved. (It would be great to have that anointing right now as we study) Peter responded by saying “repent” and be baptized. Paul takes up the same theme in Acts 17:30 and simply states that all people are to repent. I am sure that all includes you and me. The writer of the book of Hebrews states in chapter 6:1 calling repentance a fundamental doctrine.

In Hebrews 12:17 when the life of Esau is discussed. Hebrews states that Esau couldn’t find anyway to change his mind and repent even through he was sorrowful and tried. I don’t want my heart to become callused and become insensitive to the Holy Spirit as He convicts of sin, righteousness and judgement. I want to instantly turn from anything that would contaminate spirit, soul, or body. I want to be a person of repentance.

Summary:

The key idea for us to remember is that God always wants us to come toward Him so He can get closer to us. (James 4:8) The heart of the Father is to fellowship with us and to be given an opportunity to bless us. Our Father loves us so much that He is always there to give us a way of return. (II Samuel 14:14, Hosea 14:4) When we fall and the Holy Spirit is dealing with our heart, we need to immediately run to the Lord and use I John 1:9 to get instantly back into fellowship. Repentance is a decision and not a feeling. If I understand that, it simply is an act of my will to submit to the will of God. Once I make the decision and act then the Lord’s power comes to help me walk back to where I should be. Remember that the Holy Spirit is the helper not the doer.

Action:

Ask the Holy Spirit to bring to mind any area in your life that you need to repent and turn. Pray and ask the Lord’s forgiveness for trusting in the wrong thing and declare that you are walking back into fellowship with the Lord and trusting in Him. Thank the Lord for the strength to stand strong against the attacks of the Devil and that you will stay on the path that the Lord has for you. Keep thanking the Lord for His forgiveness until the feelings line up.
