Lesson 5
Compassion of the Lord
Concept:
Let us begin by taking a look at the various definitions of compassion and allow the Lord to fill us with joy when we begin to see the strong feeling that the Father has for us.
Splagchnizomai: Greek 4697 (Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance)
To have bowels yearn, feel sympathy, to pity.
Chanan: Hebrew 2603 (Strong’s Exhastive Concordance)
To bend or stoop in kindness to an inferior, to favor, bestow, give, grant, entreat favor, merciful, have pity upon, make supplication.
Racham: Hebrew 7355 (Strong’s Exhastive Concordance)
To fondle, to love, have compassion, obtain mercy, have pity
Nacham: Hebrew 5126 (Strong’s Exhastive Concordance)
Breathe strongly, to pity, console, to avenge oneself
Dake’s Bible: Compassion is the drawing and agitation of the innermost parts. It causes revolting action in the innermost being to bring deliverance from unlawful and inhuman misery and suffering.
Splanchnizomai: (Spirit Filled Life Bible) To be moved with deep compassion or pity. The Greeks regarded the bowels as the place where strong and powerful emotions originated. The Hebrews regarded compassion as the place where tender mercies and feelings of affection, compassion, sympathy, and pity originated. It is the direct motive
for at least five of Jesus Miracles.
Compassion (Webster’s Dictionary) to feel pity, sorrow for suffering accompanied by an urge to help, deep sympathy.
As you can see compassion is a word that shows not a surface response but something that is down deep. When the scriptures tell us that our Heavenly Father has compassion for us it is not a trite statement. The connotation of the word is that there is something moving down deep that is going to explode to the surface and change a situation.

Summary:
When the Lord says that He is going to have mercy (compassion) on whom I have mercy, He is talking about you. He is moved to action by your weakness and He desires to be our strength. Romans 9: 23 states “What if he did this to make the riches of his glory known to the objects of his mercy, whom he prepared in advance for glory—“, the objects that the Lord is talking about is you and me. He desires to have mercy (compassion) on you and me. His love toward us is not maybe, it is yes and amen. II Timothy 2:21 states “ If a man cleanses himself from the latter, he will be an instrument for noble purposes, made holy, useful to the Master and prepared to do any good work.” The Lord wants to make us into gold and silver vessels that have noble purpose and then use us for His glory. His heart is to move on our behalf and change our situation and us. The Lord desires His compassion to manifest in our lives and be seen by all that are watching. Remember it was the Lord’s goodness that was shown to Moses when he asked to see the Lord. The Lord passed in front of Moses and proclaimed that He was a compassionate and gracious God. Allow Him to be that to you.
Action:
In the areas that you know are not filled with the Lord’s compassion, begin to pray and ask the Lord to fill you with His compassion. i.e. as you watch the news and you know that your heart has become hardened, then ask the Lord to change your heart into a heart like His. Begin to pray blessings on people that you are callused toward and watch the Lord change your heart. As you are waiting in a store, look around and ask the Lord to give you His heart for the lost. The Lord wants to change us and it is always done as we ask. When we ask the, Holy Spirit will use the Word to transform us into His image.
